Tumescent Liposuction

This particular method of liposuction has changed the way the cosmetic surgery community performs lipo procedures. By filling the area of fat with a dilute solution of anesthetic and medication prior to removing the excess fat, surgeons can more safely and effectively remove both deep and surface fat deposits without discomfort or significant blood loss. Improved cosmetic results and quick healing are also benefits of tumescent liposuction.

Before the procedure is performed a doctor will consult and define the areas to be suctioned with a pen. A large amount of anesthetic solution is injected directly into the liposuction site to shrink blood vessels and reduce the amount of bleeding that will occur during surgery.

A small incision provides access for a thin tube called a cannula which is connected to a vacuum machine, and the cannula is inserted under the skin and pulled back and forth to draw out the fat to a sterile collection system. After the excess fat has been taken out, patients are made to wear an elastic compression garment to contract the skin and aid in healing. The scuplted look that results means more attractive contours.

The benefits of tumescent liposuction are significant over that of the more traditional procedure. Less blood loss, less bruising, fewer irregularities of the skin and increased recovery rates.

Because it is an office-based procedure, tumescent liposuction doesn't run the risks of general anesthesia and avoids the expense that goes along with hospitalization. Patients are awake during the procedure and stand during surgery. In this way, the surgeon can remark a patient if additional suction is necessary.

To ensure that surgeons are best able to serve the needs of their clients, a complete medical history, physical examination and lab tests are collected for analysis. During consultation, doctors will review the procedure you have selected and go over the risks and potential complications associated with surgery. Preoperative photographs will also be taken during consultation and consent for surgery will be obtained.

Upon completion of your surgery, patients are wrapped in garments meant to absorb drainage. Drainage is normal and expected in the first two days, and local anesthesia administered during liposuction will provide excellent pain relief for the first 24 hours.

Downtime after tumescent liposuction is minimal when compared to traditional surgical methods. Work can be resumed after 2-3 days and exercise in as little as a week.
